It is quite possible that NFU and NPA may be members of an FMD
stakeholder group. In this day and age it is perfectly normal for
stakeholder groups to be given briefings on major issues. This is
certainly nothing specific to this situation, or defra, but is now
common across both national and local government.

Informing organisations who have members who may / will be affected is also
a very effective method of spreading required information. I understand that
some have text and email alerts for members. I know I have had a goodly
number of emails from the NFUS and I am not on any particular alerts setup.
DEFRA etc have not got themselves set up with this sort of messaging yet.
They should have - they have most other information about us all but that is
their shortfall.
By using groups and organisations who have "instant" direct contact with
their members you can get information out very quickly and efficiently.

In our part of the world the NFU put out a weekly bulletin that helps keep the community in touch with regional farming news and events. During the past couple of weeks the 'farmers fax' as they are known have been issued whenever there has been any significant developments and the FMD related information has been very good.
