54,000 turkeys being destroyed in Shenandoah County in Virginia after
discovery of low path H5N1 during pre slaughter testing.
Last full blown Aivan flu outbreak in the same area was 2002 when almost 5
million birds were destroyed
Nearby Rockingham county is possibly the largest area of US poultry
production
and in the news for the area:-
July 11 2007
Massive fish kills in Shenandoah River are being investigated and two
university professors have recommended a focus on litter from the poultry
industry as a possibly cause. Poultry litter is either processed or applied
directly to fields and is used extensively throughout the area supplied by
the 900 poultry farms in Shenandoah valley.
