I think the mistake was in asking the UN for support in the first
place. The UN deals (effectively or otherwise) with strategic-scale
situations not individual incidents.
With all due sympathy to the sailors and marines being held by Iran,
and their families and friends, there are much more serious things
happening in the world today. Compared with internal conflict in
Iraq, Zimbabwe, Darfur in Sudan, and many other places, this
kidnapping would come very low down on any scale of seriously
hostile actions.
Trouble is it might very easily escalate into a much bigger affair. I
imagine that's what the kidnappers wanted to achieve when they took the
hostages. Even if the Iran govt wants to keep things simmered down they
might have trouble in releasing them without it looking like a backing-down.
A thought: Tony might be extremely reluctant to step down as PM
while these sailors and marines are still being held captive.
Quite frankly that might be good if his continued presence as leader helps
to get rid of this government.
