The Foton appears to be robust and chunky enough, with a 2.25 litre
three cylinder engine. The front loader is also big & robust-looking
and is self-levelling. I'm expecting the all-in price to be around
£9.5K with a year's warranty. However, the whole thing is a bit big
for our barn and one or two tight gateways. I've heard a few horror
stories about Chinese tractor reliability, but Foton have been around
for eight years and this model looks much more substantial than the
usual Jinma, Benye, Siromer models in the the 20 - 30hp bracket.
I have heard some good things now about the little Chinese tractors
recently, but as you say, earlier ones were not that well thought of.
Regular oil changes and greasing is a must I was told :-) Bolts come
undone and need checking etc... A solid local dealer is the first
requirement i would suggest, an eBay purchase may not be a recipie for a
long relationship, but AIR, Foton are sold through dealers?
Have a look at www.affordabletractors.co.uk for some other ideas. These
little japanese paddy tractors are cheap at present here in the UK. Some
of the Western style machines will hold their value far better I would
suggest too.
