It's a recent image of an Aurora Borealis seen from the space shuttle
Discovery.

We can also see some stars above the horizon. The constellations Lyra
and Hercules are prominent. Look at the pattern of the little asterism
low on the horizon at the very center of the photo. It's a little group
of 5 stars shaped like this:

The little dot marks the exact direction the earth is going through
space. Anyway, I thought it was cool that the place where "Spaceship
Earth" is headed is dead ahead in this photo!

It is comforting to know that the driver of Earth can see where he/she is
going.

at least we aren't going to hear shouts of 'left hand down a bit'
