If you want fun with zoom, the Kodak Z740 gives you 10x optical zoom
for under 150 squid from amazon. Excellent for pictures of birds which
you may not get close enough for a good picture.
The major problem is that it has a Kodak lens, and Kodak lenses are pants.
As indeed are Kodak digital cameras in general.
I've given up on using them because they tend to over-compress and there is
a great deal of unnecessary manipulation of the image in the camera. Hence
a picture on a Kodak camera of the same resolution as a Fuji camera will
look much grainier than the Fuji image because the "best" setting on the
Kodak is producing an image about the same size as the "medium" setting on
the Fuji. Also the Fujinon lens will be sharper and have more contrast than
the Kodak.
As an amateur who just wants home snaps, I couldn't possibly level any
such complaint. Picture quality is better than anything I could want,
and it would cost much more to get a similar optical zoom on another
camera. It is brilliantly easy to use, has more facilities than I need,
and has none of the failings oz cites for cheap cameras.
