Used to live 5 or 6 miles from three different phone masts, and if you
were out of the village you could often have line-of-sight to all three.
But buildings, and especially modern steel-clad farm buildings, made a
lot of difference.
The mobile phone companies don't seem to bother with maps of coverage so
much as they did. I think, for a lot of the country, there'd need to be
impractical levels of detail now. I remember that, when I first bought a
mobile phone, the local coverage did depend a lot on which company you
signed up with, not that the salesmen seemed to realise that, as a
farmer, I needed some quite specific info, that didn't map well to
postcodes.
