yes, that is one communications revolution I have sidestepped. Someone
did
threaten to text my email, until I threatened to reply to his phone,
with an
email that would take him days to download ;-)))

I exchange text messages with Child on a regular basis (her internet
account is dial-up).

She kept me updated whilst doing the obligatory backpacking in Oz - as
not all of the places where she went had cybercafes but when she had
access I used to get a full update (along with a number of others on
her list) via a hotmail account.

Since we've both upgraded our mobiles she sends the occasional photo
plus text message, e.g. "What's the matter with this plant on my
windowsill?" I'll send something such as "Is this handbag suitable?"

She's just discovered that she can't send photos from abroad with her
account - I've had a text stating "Tried to send visual proof of an
Ifor Williams trailer in a village 1400m asl in Spain. Will send it
when I get back."

one of our problems is that we don't get mobile phone reception here anyway,
so can only use it when we are away,
Hence there is no point leaving the phone on at home when no one can contact
it
