I think the reason they are stopping the old accounts is that the
credit is held in the SIM, they don't know how you are using the
phone. The new SIMs require a call (free) to be made to find the
credit so they now have this information under their control.

my old phone told me how much credit I had left after each call,
automatically, by definition I will not know if the new phone does
this until after 3rd July

It won't give you the credit remaining automatically after each
call. *#10# OK will give you the credit, and the call is free. Look
on the little cards hidden amongst the bumph you got with the new
SIM card it will give you a hot key (2?) that will dial *#10# to
obtain the credit.

but what was wrong with it just telling me automatically?

You knew but O2 didn't.

If not then at a certain point every year I suppose I'll run out of
credit and have to find a phone box

Try Fresh, Carphone Warehouse. With them you have to actually phone
and ask for your credit, and pay for the call. They do however send
a text message when the credit reduces to, I think, £4.

I can go for five or six months with £4 credit! If it told me when I
was down to £1 it would be more like.

I do have one phone contract where I just make calls, and at the end
of the month they send me a bill, which I then pay. That strikes me
as an excellent system, but it might be a bit advanced to mobile
companies to cope with ;-((

Indeed.
