I'm in much the same boat as you, except my smallholding isn't quite so
small and it's not in the UK. What I would say is don't underestimate how
much work and expense the small holding is going to incur. I think that so
far it is costing me one week's lost income a month just to maintain the
land in good condition. Something as simple as mowing takes a couple of
days - even the local agricultural contractor who has a much bigger and
more powerful tractor than I do needs a day and a half for the work.
Of course with animals as you intend you also have to remember that you are
kissing goodbye to your chances of leaving your property as a couple for
very long. That's why, despite my desire to produce our own eggs and in
particular to keep a few pigs, we've stayed as an arable farm.
