I am about to buy a small holding.farmhouse, garden and about 8 acres of grazing.
Best of luck Barry. I did the same coming up for seven years ago. Sadly,
I have to go out to work to earn a living - small-holding is an
expensive hobby; or rather, mortgages have to be paid somehow and a
small-holding is *not* going to pay many bills!
I am nowhere near experienced enough to offer advice :-) All I would say
is, go slowly. Weigh up decisions very carefully and don't invest in
anything without a lot of thought. Apart from fences. Having said that,
at some point you have to take the plunge and do something - my other
half has been quite good in pushing me along into new developments.
Oz and sheep? Well, he has got a bit of a point. Why not think about
fattening bullocks. My *limited* experience is that they are a lot less
trouble than sheep (we have very small numbers indeed of both). Pigs on
the other hand, have for us been the least trouble of all. Where is your
nearest slaughter house, by the way, and have you got means of
transport? We bought an old horse trailer which has paid for itself by
cutting out the transport costs.
Keep asking questions. The people here have been very generous to me
with their advice. And their entertainment :-) And try and find out who
your farming neighbours are. Their local advice will probably be even
more useful.
