Hi, Jill: It may be purely coincidental, Jill. But I do have some
insight into some of the activities internally within these companies.
The parallels that do exist are not co-incicental, however.
There is an ongoing effort in the UK to modify your own immigration
laws, rules and regulations. Your own country has a problem very
similar to ours, here. Whereas many of your immigrants, portions of
which populations are "illegal" are a problem that's being made more
public all the time. Actually, your England might be even more a
"melting pot" than in the States. You have lots of immigrants from
India, Pakistan, Arab countries, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Africa.
Riding the bus from Heathrow to downtown London, and train on to
Nottingham made me aware of that several years ago.
In recent years, you folks have seen more coming into your country from
places like Serbia, Bosnia, Turkey and former communist Russia.
What we're having happen, here in the Plains, now, is an
ever-increasing Mexican population. This has really accelerated in
the post-NAFTA passage years.....mid-90's to the present. The NAFTA
Trade policy has not been friendly to the rural Mexican economy. The
meat-packing industry was a natural for these displaced Mexicans to
merge and blend into our area....so was the corporate swine
industry.....and the chicken/chicken processing industry. Northwest
Oklahoma, Southwest Kansas cities have been overwhelmed by this
immigration. These industries have "looked the other way," regarding
legals vs. illegals....and it has had a tremendous cost for American
taxpayers, property owners and people who have resided in these areas
for years.
Now that these (both legal and illegal) populations have increased,
they are asking for more "rights and entitlements." I can assure you
that this is becoming more of a problem all the time. Just this past
week, the American National Anthem was released on CD in Spanish.
That got some "native Americans" fired-up real fast.
So when you have companies like Swift, shutting down for a day, after
already laying off people who have worked in some of their plants, like
the one in Norfolk, Nebraska, who have depended on their jobs to make
their livings, these kinds of events aren't viewed as being
constructive to this situation, by a lot of people.....particularly, if
you have sold a pen of cattle to one of these packers, or have a pen of
cattle to sell, and can't get a decent bid for them, because of the
plant being shut down.....or you have a family to feed and no income
because Swift closed their plant, you'd been working in for years.
By following developments in your country for five years or so, what
with all the rules and regulations your own Blair government has
managed to impose on your rural farming communities, we are seeing
those policies "bleed" across the pond and take foothold here, too.
So I wasn't being spurrious. I am being observant and aware that what
happens in the UK won't take long to happen to us, too. When our
freedoms are limited, when compared to how things were 20-30 years ago,
and how these changes have made things increase in costs, I fail to be
re-assured by the statements your Prime Minister and our President and
their minions like Gordon Brown/Margaret Beckett and our Mike Johanns
or Robert Portman or Susan Schwab or Condoleeza Rice/Don Rumsfeld make,
telling us to be how "glad" we are, as they "protect our freedoms," as
they all continue to take them away.
If that isn't enough, there is a general trend that has occurred, just
as in today's news regarding your Bird Flu situation. The UK
acknowledges the first farm-bird flu situation, now a second and third
and Bingo! Japan places a ban on British poultry imports.
In January, we had gotten our Beef Trade re-established with Japan.
Then, Bingo!, one order for veal (calf meat - all under 24-months old)
which included a "hotel rack of veal,"
the equivalent to a whole rack of lamb, both of which contain a portion
of spinal column, left intact, was placed from Japan. That shipment
of veal, from Atlantic Veal and Lamb in Brooklyn, New York, cost the
American Beef industry millions of dollars lost in "Potential Export
Sales." (It cost less than $4,000.00 to air freight it from New York
to Japan....and the inspectors at Narita airport KNEW/were waiting for
its arrival!)
(One thing that's not common knowledge, Jill, is nearly 100% of the
people Atlantic Veal employs are Hispanic/Latino who actually processed
and shipped this order. Another thing that's not common knowledge is
that Atlantic has already experienced litigation in regard to its
treatment and employment policies for its Hispanic/Latino employees.
This occurred in Sept, 2001. And also, the Japanese firm that placed
this 850# order is in the business of making BSE-testing equipment....a
multi-national company who also sells your own labs some of its
BSE-testing and other tissue-testing equipment.)
Again, seemingly un-related events may have more relativity than we
suspect.
