"An ITN news poll of 2000 viewers last Friday found that 49 per cent may
consider cutting poultry from their diets as the situation goes forward,
with 23 per cent saying they will stop eating eggs and chicken.

That is probably about as accurate as the poll results that come out every
year that say that 75% of the British public are against battery
production - yet 75% of them still only buy battery eggs
Everyone interviewed so far has said they don't see them changing. Poultry
is safe and so are eggs

Frankly, it depends on what question you ask, but I think it fairly obvious
that sales will fall very sharply.

The damage was done long ago in Britain. The BSE cover-up was truly shocking
and the public know that.

Events since have not helped and no amount or reassurance from poultry
producers or the government will help.

Reform is absolutely essential and inevitable.

An open admission of past mistakes and a few very public sackings, without
gardening leave, is the minimum that will help a little in the short term.
At least it gives the impression that the government are serious about
making sure that the public are protected.

It is merely a question as to whether farming and the veterinary industry
realise deeper reform is necessary and do it themselves or have it forced
on them..
