Will sugar beet farming continue in England?.. There is a great deal of
anger here, people are saying that the privatised Sugar processor is
using compensation to pay off debts cause by unwise speculation...
Others, are pointing out that Ireland's sugar farming with top
production of 20-25tons ber acre could never compete with top Bavarian
or French top production of 30+ tons.
Our local factory is putting in a big bioethanol plant, but that can
run equally well or better on wheat. We are waiting to see what the
ex-farm price for beet will be, there has been no talk of haulage
allowances so if they go that will be the end of beet for us. Under
the new price regime I suspect it will be 20 mile hauls or less to
be viable.
Since, I have been told that there is some sort of compensation for
people who made sugar-beet equipment.. Two companys here, at least.
