I have hydraulic (red) oil leaking out of the bell housing between
engine and the gearbox.
I guess the shaft seals have gone on the gear box. I guess i need to
take the engine out to get at the gear box / drive unit . Once there,
remove the drive unit and send away to be repaired. Can anyone advise
if this is right. Its old but runs great so i don't mind putting in a
few hours to fix.

There is a single gear set in the upper housing. ... in the outdrive still turns with the engine except for the prop shaft.... You can't completely rule out the engine just because it revs fine without ... If it has been years since the lower unit plug was pulled then some ... (rec.boats)

Re: any ideas on better gas milage on my 95 yj ... You get better mileage by flooring it and staying in high ...gear up a hill than by downshifting. ... Flooring it will kick the engine into "power mode" ... the gears are made for the tire size that comes ... (rec.autos.4x4)

Re: Mercrusier Alpha problem, seeking advice ... It sounds like you have chewed the teeth off of the clutch or gear face.... The engine coupler should be fine, but it wouldn't hurt to pull the upper... I immediately thought spun prop.... (rec.boats)
