If you are buying oil from an agricultural machinery outlet, they will

UK summer use 20/40 multigrade should do. Things have moved on since
your tractor was built.
Nonsense. I have been using super universal 15w/30 since 1972 and in that
David Brown engine for many years and in naturally aspirated and turbo
units. It needs a high detergent oil and IIRC this particular late model is
mildly turbocharged and has wet brakes. It greatly simplifies inventory and
prevents mistakes if only one oil is used for all and a super universal
would do the job. A 10w/30 could even substitute ATF in its power steering
reservoir and, barring leaks, replace EP90 in the front axle and hubs.
I stand corrected. The first David Brown handbook that came to hand was the 1210. My 1210 is fitted with the same engine as the 1390 (I think) and I assumed also the 1394?
The UK approved lubricants list only gives trade names and not the viscosity. The o/p asked for a suitable grade and I gave that quoted in the *except UK and Ireland* list for Summer use 20W/30 or 20W/40.
I cannot think of any agricultural machinery outlet that sells 20w/40 diesel
engine oil or any brand that sells such an oil, and I should know ;-)
Shell Rotella SX? Last seen in an inboard motor boat engine.
Apart
from anything else, oil is a passion of mine and has been ever since before
SeriesIII oils were introduced when I was knee high.
I'm not going to fight over it:-)
