Cattle woes

Cherry the dexter produced two dead calves yesterday morning, small but
reasonably perfectly formed but with huge amounts of mucus in their
lungs. Vet's opinion - it happens, move on, which is clearly right, but
two dead calves represents 100 per cent mortality for us, and it doesn't
really feel like we've learnt a lot from the experience.
Still, new calf acquired yesterday morning: foster mother and baby
seemingly doing very well. Turned out adequately in the end, but more
expensive and not what we were expecting. Still, that's small-holding
for you. :-|
