The ideal solution would be something that would allow the land to be
kept in reasonable condition without needing lots of work, and with
some way of paying for itself. If I were to make a profit that would be
good, but as long as I don't make a loss I am not bothered.

geese?

Really - I would have thought they would be quite a lot of work.

Actually its not a bad suggestion. Geese can be done on a small scale
and usually make a little money. On a larger scale you can easily flood
the market, price goes down . They eat mostly grass, cost little to
keep, and were it not for foxes more or less look after themselves. Need
fattened for Christmas. Plucking them is a fair bit of work, but also
pays.

An electric fence is the best defence against foxes, then you don't have
to put them away at night. Best to use a permanent fence and add
electric wires at strategic heights on the outside. You will have to
stop weeds growing up the fence (roundup at regular intervals. They
ignore shelters if provided, though are easy enough to put to bed. They
tend not to breed reliably, though they can be good if you get things
right. Incubation adds to the work, but is more reliable, and you can
incubate more than they can raise.

They need water but don't actually need a pond. Overall I would think
they are less work than most things.
