It's a load of bollocks IMO, there are very cheap cameras around that don't need mains, don't need wires and provide reasonable quality output.

Sadly the place that I buy mine from isn't online at the moment - the server seems to have fallen over (Microsoft rubbish).

In all cases you can dispense with the mains supply for the camera and use a car battery +12V DC converter, stack of NiMH batteries or whatever floats your boat. Screwfix offer a 10 hour battery pack but it seems a bit feeble compared to using a car battery.
