Of course galaxies are mostly empty space between the stars, so when
they collide very few stars actually hit each other. The Galactic shape
gets knocked about a bit as a larger galaxy forms. The earth could get
by unscathed, except that, of the top of my head, I'm not sure 4
billion years isn't the expected life of the sun - Oz?
