How about a Gatesfree package - OpenOffice is free and can read and
save as MSOffice formats.

(can't remember whether you're on BB or not - it's quite a large
download)

It's on the cover CDs with the current issue of PC Format. 

Oh! That would mean going shopping in the run up to Christmas:-(

We will still need word for the back files and Angela's school work. I suppose she is planning to retire......
