Re: BT Wayleaves

Got to be careful with BT, they are a law unto themselves. We had to wait a good while for them to come and mark where there cable lies down our private road that feeds us and two neighbours. The surveyor got it wrong (easily done as it turned out there was an old cable not on his rough plans) and we knackered the cable. The one line is to an automated high priority system but it took 10 days to get an engineer for a 10 minute fix. In the meantime we had a hell of a job as they were going to charge us for the job even though their own surveyor said it was their mistake. Lots of their cables are just inches deep in the verges and cross inside the edge of some fields, seems we are liable if we dig up any of their unmarked cables. Mind the local engineers are fine and it is just BT's lack of public access to management that causes the trouble.

Yes. With feeling!

We pulled up a BT cable while fencing rabbits. About 600 metres from the nearest highway so rather unexpected. Less than 12" deep and where fencing might reasonably be expected. The nearest neighbour in that direction is Brocket Hall and the outlying houses. Big panic until a little discreet telephoning established they were still connected.

Apart from this post, I have not informed BT:-)

When the water drillers broke through the hedge to create access to their compound they excavated a BT cable. I had assumed this was the connection to the farmhouse and barn dwellers and the wayleave engineer marked this on his initial map. It was only when I queried the accuracy of his measurement that a second visit found the real cable in a totally different place.

I avoided paying an invoice from our electricity supplier (after finding the sewage pumping station supply) by pointing out that they had no wayleave agreement, the cable was not properly marked and was not at a reasonable depth.
