AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL CENSUS : JUNE 2005
UNITED KINGDOM
Agricultural and Horticultural Census carried out by each of the United
Kingdom Agriculture Departments.
The figures in this notice are provisional and are based on a sample of main
holdings conducted in June 2005,
estimates have also been made for minor holdings. The aim is to give an
indication of the main trends, more detailed
revised figures taking into account later returns and further checks on the
responses received will be published in
January 2006. The final revised notice will also include figures for poultry
and labour.
In summary, the key results comparing June 2005 with June 2004 are:
.. The total area of crops decreased by 3.0%.
.. The wheat area has decreased by 6.0%, the total barley area decreased by
7.0%.
.. The total oilseed rape area increased by 6.3%
.. The area of potatoes showed an decrease of 6.0 %.
.. The area of bare fallow has shown an increase of 373% The rise in the bare
fallow area in England is believed to
be due to the way the farmers have described their land following the
introduction of the Single Payment Scheme.
.. The number of dairy cows was 2.8% lower than in 2004, whilst the number of
beef cows rose by 0.9% compared to
.. Total breeding pigs breeding herd fell by 8.3%.
.. The sheep breeding flock decreased by 4.6%
