Just a thought: Are we likely to see fodder beets/mangolds increasing?
Cheerio,
Maize has pretty well taken over in this part of the country for
livestock feed. When I was small I remember going to mow oats and
vetches for calves, after that it was marrowstem kale, then
mangolds. We stopped fodder beet about three years ago. They suited
the animals out at grass when we had beef, but don't fit in the
dairy ration. Fodder beet seem to be either soft enough to feed
whole but liable to damage when harvested, or so hard that they
needed chopping before feeding. They tend to grow so big that a
standard beet harvester has a job to get them up the elevators.
