It might be worth considering the 'whole picture', if you are likely to
visit the USA on a regular basis then perhaps a dollar account with a
british bank may work. I think these require that a significant balance is
held, so may not be suitable.

If it is any consolation it is no easier to send Euros from France to
Germany, the banks seem to have continued to milk international transfers of
money.
