it is hoped that the first previously OTMS beef will go into the food chain
from November 7th on.
Interesting comments made in this weeks Farmers Guardian
St Merryn Foods producer club manager said that they have increased carcass
weights and numbers driven price down
ABP says it is killing more cattle at higher weights.
Duncan Sinclair, MLC economics manager and smart chap pointed out that
between January and July the number of cattle that came onto the market was
a whole 0.3% up on last ear.
Carcass weights were up by a full 14kg, or 3%, again not enough to trigger
the cuts. He also pointed out that beef imports up until the end of July
were actually down 12% on last year.
August figures should be out by now and they might show a change in
supply/kill numbers, whatever but it is looking very similar to the dairy
situation. A handful of big retailers and processors can just pay what they
want to to keep their margins up
