Hmmm...
How deep and what was the geology.
I imagine outside the nice chalk aquifers its rather more hit and miss.

I'm not sure lining would help that much.
They do seem to encircle the bore with 'inert silica granules', which I
would probably describe as gravel but which may reduce clogging by
'minerals'.
