2) n.5 is rounded down if n.5 is lower than 5 and up if it is higher
than 5.
When I did Maths O and A levels the general *maths* rule for rounding
was up if 5-9 and down if 0-4, so n.5 would have been rounded up to n
whatever the value of n. The rule you recall is, if I recall rightly, a
different one called (sometimes at least) *statistician's* rounding. We
never touched that at O and A levels but then that was in the 1960s and
without much stats :)
the following paragraph still doesn't explain whether the VAT 1 item
that
costs £1 is 18p or 17p
Has the ECJ opined in the Ahold case yet?
