National Insurance on lump sum payments

Within the last couple of years the taxman has ordered Scottish Junior
football clubs to operate PAYE for its players and officials. Junior
Football, despite the confusing name is not youth football but rather
semi-professional football. Prior to this the players were paid a signing on
fee at the start of the season and a weekly wage (which was a nominal sum)
and the players were to declare their income on their own tax returns. Guess
what - none of them did so and now the clubs have to operate PAYE.
As the amounts involved are only £2,000 - £3,000 for each player over the
course of a season they are below the National Insurance limit. Do they HAVE
to be paid weekly/monthly to be below the NI limit? Or would payments in
August, December and March attract NI as lump sums even though they are
actually for a longer period but for convenience sake paid in three
instalments? At the moment they are paid each week over a 40 week season.
