Each person is an individual, they have their own tax allowances and their on tax bands. These are things that each are entitled to but they do not own them and it is not within their power to share them.
(A) Husband works full-time earning £40Kpa, wife works
60% part-time earning £15Kpa but also does all housework
/ childminding etc - total household income £55Kpa;
(B) Husband works 75% part-time earning £30Kpa but also
does all housework/childminding etc, wife works full-time
earning £25Kpa, total household income £55Kpa.
In both situations, the husband & wife share the "breadwinning"
and the "household stuff" between them, and in both
situations they have the same total household gross income.
Now tell us again - why should they be taxed differently?
Any way, they are not sharing it. On paper the wife might be getting half these earnings but in reality, I would bet that they are not.
I'm with Tim here - they *shouldn't* be taxed differently. Taking a more extremely example where family income in both is £50k per year:
In the first scenario, wife is the only one in paid employment (husband stays at home & brings up the children) and so she pays higher rate tax and benefits from only a single tax allowance.
In the second scenario, both husband & wife are both in paid work and both earn £25k. Both are standard rate tax payers and both benefit from two tax allowances.
Why should a tax system penalise the first scenario more?
It doesnt penalise anyone, it just taxes the earnings of the individual. You will be telling me next its ok to sell your unused allowances on ebay.
I dont concern myself with the justice of the system. Once you have managed to petition the chancellor to change the law, then fair go, you can share what you like but thats not the way that its works at the moment.
You are proposing that just because two people live under the same roof and have a church sponsored partnership agreement, then its ok to share their allowance. what about those that don have that agreement. What about someone that has more than one wife. four wives and he can earn £20k per annum and not pay a penny.
What you are proposing is something that only an independant contractor can exploit. That specifically excludes anyone in public service, or any one in employment, thats about 70% of the population. So where is the justice in that?
