The yanks say "different than" all the time, of course, but
we should not descend to their level.

It *can* be right, though, in contexts such as where the
difference is itself being compared:

If the partners' shares are different this year, and will also
be different next year, then it could well be the case that next
year they are *more different than* this year.


Speaking of language issues, I found the subject line of this
thread misleading. Clearly what is intended to be discussed
is how the profits and capital reserves of a partnership are
split amongst the partners, but the words "partnership split"
first painted a picture in my mind of a partnership being
dissolved, rended asunder, "split".
