Hi all.

Got this NAS drive for sale. It's the 500GB Gigabit Model. Very
well reviewed and seems to be accepted as amongst the best
standalone NAS drives available. In fully working order and under
warranty until the end of November 2008.

It's unboxed but fully working and I'll include a power lead and
gigabit network cable.

Tomshardware.com review here:
Buffalo Technology LinkStation Pro: One Hot NAS!

Cheapest I can find it new is around £150, so I'm looking for £100
delivered.

Google won't let me mask my email address, and my ISP doesn't have
its own USENET server, so sadly the reply-to address *is* valid :(

Expensive!! see http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131280
Harldy a fair comparison. the Linkstation can take a further two
drives plugged into its USB sockets. It also massively outperforms
it. I know which one I would buy..
Why bother anyway, buy a cheap PC at the most £150, run Linux,
without keyboard or monitor administer it remotely.
It'll probably benefit from proper cooling, most of the cheaper NAS
don't have fan assisted cooling.

Electricity bills...

I used to use cheap desktop PCs for such purposes, running FreeNAS.
However, electricity prices have risen year on year and running costs
now dominate the situation for 24x7x365.

Cheap, eg dead-screen, laptops with external drives are cheaper to run
but suffer a big performance hit. They also have reliability problems
as they weren't designed for continuous running. I have a dozen of
them running FreeNAS that I would much rather replace with boxes like
these.
The fan cooling problem is easily fixed by, erm, adding a fan.
However, the Linkstation does have a fan - it is a nice bit of kit.

I was very tempted by this unit. They are excellent, IMHO. I could
have justified 90GBP, but not 100GBP - but that is because I don't
charge for the extra time in setting up a laptop solution. ;)

If you read the revues, they don't get very good tranfer rates so maybe the o/s system is not linux or it's not been optimised.

Follow the link provided by the OP and click on performance. eg

Looks like bloody good transfer rates to me.

However if you're using old laptops then maybe that isn't a problem to you.

"suffer a big perfomance hit" - rather indicates that it is a problem for me.

However, when kit is funded by selling flags on street corners and stuff in charity shops, money is an even bigger problem. Producing money is taking more and more of a charity's time and effort these days. Which really hurts. As with most money, it takes a lot of effort to get it and very, very little to spend it.

I still think the ventilation in these cases is never as good as a pc and personally, I still have an instinctive dislike of mounting disks vertically.

I'd agree on the ventilation issue with some cheap units. The Linkstation has a big fan, IIRC. However, it is usually possible to add a fan neatly to a cheap NAS box. Or seperate the two halves of the box and make a perforated metal spacer to go between the two. Or something.

As for the mounting disks vertically - I do that by preference. Only goes to show.
