Well every machine I have used running Vista feels like a dog. YMMV.

My machines are fine honestly unless I`m not fussy enough, but if I
noticed some serious performance issues I would mention it.

Due? I just don't get it, but that's none of my business.

Well I think its fair to buy a complete new machine every 5 years as long
as your not upgrading every year or so, I think its fair to get a max of 5
years out of a £ 550 outlay.

That's a comprehensive answer, if nothing else.

Its the truth, unless you are really poor/drink/smoke/ take drugs or are a
fashion victim you should be able to put away similar money.

It's not about that. If I decided to upgrade to a faster machine, I can't
see the point of negating the upgrade by installing a newer, more
resource demanding OS unless of course it allowed me to do something I
couldn't with
the existing.

In my expierience the performance hit you take by running Vista isn't that
great these modern CPU have a lot of performance available and Vista
hardly eats into any of it, again RAM is inexpensive atm so you can buy
plenty of that.

whats the point of vista ? never had any problems with DOS and Windows 3.11
with 16meg of ram and 1gig HD on a 386 50mhz machine, booted faster than
any of these modern machines and was so memory efficient (had to be lack of
ram in the good old days) was hooked up to a 9600 baud modem on compuserve
(never had to pay any fees to them some reason they kept giving me money on
my account) most software companies gave you there software if you asked
them for a trial version (used to work in IT department and they wanted my
£'s) trial version was ALWAYS full version but on 3.5" floppy.

Hmm what do you do on a PC ?

Browse the internet - high speed cpu not needed
Write letters - high spec system not needed
read/write emails - high spec system not needed
newsreader - high spec system not needed
play dvd movies (NOT blueray or HD) - high spec not needed

SO why do you all think you need vast ammouts of ram, a super fast cpu, and
enough HD space to store all of the books in your local library ?

Play games - use WII, X-Box 360 PS3

Any games console just insert game and play

PC games - insert game, wait whilst it installs, buy latest graphics card,
get more ram, buy joypad if your lucky play game (not at best resolution
unless you want game play to be really slow) having spent as much as a
games console.

4gig memory stick £13 is a bargain.

Yes I use Linux as do all my friends, I do have a copy of Vista Ultimate
given to me by Micro$oft as still have contacts in there PR dept. and will
give me anything they produce for £0.00 its still shrink wrapped and will
stay that way.

When I tell people that I have never paid for an OS they think its all
pirate stuff, nope none of it is.

Linux = Free
M$oft = Free (to me)

I build my own systems my brother has one still running thats like 8 years
old and is still running as good as it did when I first built it for him.

In my mind Micor$oft has got all its users used to having to upgrade
hardware to get software to work ? WHY
