I have about 20 of these in daily use.

I've just had another one go the same way. Could be me - could be a
production issue. Most likely different batches, so batch fault
unlikely.

It narrows the gap a little for me between Hitachi and Samsung....

Hells bells! I got three of these on your recommendation here IIRC!

There not indestructable, mate had one go when he attempted to install Vista, he had it running in IDE mode at the time. We figured it was his fault but not sure what he did wrong, he said it froze on him during the install, then I guess he powered it down wrong as the reset button wasn't connected. He didn't really have a clue what he was doing at tbh and for the following week via emails couldn't understand why the drive wasn't being detected anymore - he thought it was something he was doing, or rather wasn't. No comprehension that the drive was now faulty.

He never told me it failed to install originally untill sometime later so at first I was operating on the basis that it wasn't being detected becuase of the SATA drivers, but it turns out Vista didn't need to be fed them anyway, picked them up automatically. He returned the drive to Samsung and they turned it around promptly, I installed the new drive and we had no further problems since.
