Having been out of the "loop" for some time (since the AMD X2 4800+
was the quickest processor around) I need some help with some new
systems.
I'm after some stupidly powerful systems (Intel-based) that will work
effectively with Windows XP 64-bit. They need to take at least 8GB of
RAM.
However, I am reluctant to purchase quad-core machines if there is no
noticeable difference in real-life performance.
Can anyone (preferably someone with very recent experience) recommend
a CPU and motherboard?
Also after a top-spec PCI-e graphics card with (preferably) HDMI
interface, as a lot of HD work will be done on these. Minimum 512MB
ram, preferably more.
Must have minimum 1 x PCI-e x16 alot and a mixture of other PCI-e
slots, PCI-e x8, as I will be putting in a high performance 16-port
PCI-e RAID card.
Money is not too much of an issue - but I don't want to spend an
additional £500 on a "gaming" machine that is only 5% quicker than a
business machine.
Overclocking is _not_ an option.
I also don't want to buy an "off-the-shelf" unit - I need to make
certain modifications that are likely to be awkward with your standard
Dell / HP machines.
Thanks
Duncan
A friend of mine likes to play with some of the latest things, so I
sent a copy of what you said over to him to see what he says :)
