Hi all,

I'm trying to compile a list if media programs (format conversion, subtitle
creation) for students (both for Mac & PC), and if possible
free/shareware/open source. Also the Windows PCs are not connected to the
internet - too many problems.

After looking for a few weeks now I have to say I'm shocked at the low
quality of programs for Windows.

Oh here we go...fucking Linux/Mac fanboi.

I use Windows exclusively, and agree that there are a lot of useless programs out there for converting media. One of the examples given, virtualdub, I agree is appalling, the others I`ve not used but can easily believe that they are ugly, complicated pieces of software. For the few times I`ve had to convert media I`ve managed to use Windows Movie maker to do it, but that`s less than ideal.

So I start looking for something similar on Windows.

VirtualDub is recommended everywhere but it is simply atrocious.

MediaCoder (open source, seemingly written in China) has a poor interface
and an integrated webserver - what the heck for???

StaxRip needs a connection to the Internet for additional installations,
making it useless.

The only useless thing here seems to be the person at your keyboard.

I`d be interested to hear your justification for that comment. Having a quick look in googles brings up lots of links but nothing obviously designed to be easy to use - why is someone useless for not knowing the best programs available to convert media on a platform they don`t use themselves very often.

Of the three examples given by the OP, you`ve not refuted any of their points for not liking the software. Why would a program need a web server, or a connection to the internet, to perform this job?

Install XP Codec Pack so you've got every single CODEC under the sun.
Install Prism which can convert anything there's an installed CODEC
for.

And finally a useful part of your post. The OP was asking for advice on a decent, easy to use program to do the job. You`ve provided a link to one, just a shame you feel the need to insult him, and everyone else who for whatever reason doesn`t use Windows regularly. Could you recommend a good program to do this task on a Mac, or under Linux? If not, why criticise someone for asking for advice in an area outside their sphere of knowledge?

And why can't they connect to the internet or are the reasons more
Mcfanboi bull***?

Possibly the effort involved in keeping a large number of PC`s up to date with patches etc? There are plenty of reasons why people might not want any computer connected to the internet, even extending as far as not having the budget to connect the room with the PC`s on to the main network with access to the internet. Jumping down his throat as you have done seems a triffle excessive based on your knowledge of the situation, which is pretty much zero.
