Hi Malte,
Thanks for your reply. The laptop (Dell Inspiron 1300) has a modem
connector, a network connector, a video connector, three USB 2.0
sockets, a microphone connector, a headphone connector and the
infernal Express Card socket, but definitely no IEEE 1394 Firewire
socket, hence my enquiry.
But I might be able to use a Firewire to USB adapter?
I need to connect a DV video camcorder to the laptop so I can upload
and edit digital video, and my need is urgent!
Tony
I am not aware of the existance of a USB to Firewire converter.
Some camcorders have a USB port too, but these usualy only allow copying of pictures rather than video.
I am afraid that unless you can get one of those Firewire ExpressCards you will have to use another computer to fetch the data from the camcorder.
Once that is done you can copy the video files across to your own computer via a cross-over network cable.
Hi again Malte,
Some facts may be of interest:
The Express Card is a new format that will entirely replace the PC
Card. Both were developed by/for PCMCIA. Express Card is
incompatible with PC Card. The cards are similar to PCMCIA but
narrower, having 26 pins rather than 68, and being 34mm wide rather
than 54mm.
There is a very good explanation here:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/vectors/2003_expresscard.pdf
I solved my problem by finding a Firewire IEEE 1394 to USB cable.
No-one had heard of "Express Card" at PC World, Currys, Currys Digital
(formerly Dixons) and Jessops (where I bought the DV camcorder), all
of which stores I tried in order to find an adapter. No joy.
Worldwide, there are only two manufacturers licensed to produce
Express Card to Firewire IEEE 1394 adapters, and neither has a UK
agent. On eBay there were only three adverts worldwide for Express
Cards of any kind and two were from the same seller!
I expect that we will see more of Express Card in the future, but at
the moment it is very difficult to find.
Thank you for your replies.
Best regards,
Tony
Hi
Well done! I have never even heared of a USB to i-Link adaptor before (got a link for it)?
Hope it all works now!
Kind Regards
