I am trying to avoid using yet another ethernet hub. I am sure that I
have seen a RJ45 doubler connector somewhere (just like a telephone one
but slightly bigger) but I can't find one anywhere now. Anyone got any
ideas?

You only use those if you have a single data socket on the wall and you want
to plug two computers into it. It works by sending data for one computer
down two of the pairs and data for the other computer down the other two
pairs.

You need an adaptor at both ends.

Buy a bigger hub.
