Re: can we please stop the bickering.

SNIP!

I would suggest that this group is a little different than many - in
that its purpose is trade and that trade does rely greatly on mutual
trust. And a little bit of mutual support, even when OT, does help
build that trust. Also such posts tend to be rather more revealing about
the people concerned than the odd "good trader" remark.

Such OT posts requesting help I would suggest aren't anti-social, but
the very opposite. They are things which help build a sense of
community. I would also suggest that they are part of the normal way of
doing business in the "real" World.

I can't see any particular problem with good/bad trader posts as they relate
to advertisements placed here. Similarly, I don't see any problem with
posts taht inquire about the trustworthiness of prosepctive buyers/sellers.
Requests for help are only "anti-social" when done deliberately, rather than
using the countless other newsgroups set up precisely for such requests and
related discussions . For example uk.comp.homebuilt would be a good
starting point for many computer-related help requests - especially as many
of the regular users of uk.adverts.computer are regular contributors there.
However, even when people making OT help requests here are politely pointed
to more appropriate newsgroups there will often be a hail of criticism and
abuse directed at the person who does the pointing. Exactly why is hard to
determine. Probably because to some people their "right" to do exactly what
they please regardless of others is their overriding concern - this means
that any criticism, however mild, of OT posting is seen as a threat to their
"freedom".

I could easily understand the need for chat, requests for help in
uk.adverts.computer etc. etc. if this was the ony newsgroup available for
such stuff but there are literally hundreds of uk. newsgroups available (and
tens of thousands of other groups as well). Why mess this one up? It is
beginning to look like an unrepresenative clique of determined OT posters is
trying to turn this group into a chat group, regardless of the wishes of
others. They may even succeed (there are plenty of other groups that have
been rendered useless by such activity), which would be a pity, given that
this group has been a useful venue for trading computer stuff for many
years. What is VERY clear is that NONE of them has the courage of his/her
convictions because none of them will actually try to amend the charter to
permit the stuff that they insist on posting. I wonder why not? Could it
be that they fear that they don't really have the support of the majority of
users? I suspect that is why they prefer to use abuse and intimidation to
try get their way.
