I would suggest that this group is a little different than many - in

build that trust. Also such posts tend to be rather more revealing
about the people concerned than the odd "good trader" remark.

Such OT posts requesting help I would suggest aren't anti-social, but
the very opposite. They are things which help build a sense of
community. I would also suggest that they are part of the normal way
of doing business in the "real" World.

Those who insist on "Naught but the charter" have in the past actually
tried to deny that such a sense of community exists becuase the rules say
it doesn't , despite the evidence to the contrary.

Now I am new here but my impression is one of the "corner shop".
Traders have been very kind and generous to me and I hope that I have
been likewise in return and to others. Almost everyone does seem to
want to go out of their way to be helpful to others.

Yes. Amongst the regulars here there is a lot of trust which helps to make
it a nice place to use.
It's also why dishonesty is jumped on ASAP even by those of us not
directly involved in a sale , as it indirectly harms our ability to buy
and sell safely

So I think a little bit of "lawlessness" does no harm and may easily
do some good. The police do turn a blind eye to someone doing 33 mph
in a 30 limit, even under a regime of "zero tolerance". A credit card
company will let you off, the first time you miss a payment. So maybe
posters should "get away" with the odd OT post, now and again -
without someone throwing the rule book at them.

Yes , but you clearly have common sense.

Obviously there has to be a limit to the amount of lawlessness
accepted. But a policeman might take a first-time minor offender to
one side and give him an ear-full (cf, personal email) rather than
cart him through the street in handcuffs whilst announcing with a
loud hailer(cf public posting). True, the latter might discourage
others - but it is more likely that others will think the policeman
is a bit of a pratt who needs a sense of proportion.

Just to add a viewpoint, great britain is a democracy, one where we are
allowed to do anything thats not against the law and I think that makes it
difficult when here, all we have is a group with a charter. NG charters are
not law (sorry neil, they really are not), merely a set of suggestions or
guidelines set out when the group was founded, perhaps many years before.
They will only ever be guidelines as there is no redress for dealing with
offenders (im going to ban you from usenet, yeah right lol) which simply
adds futility to netkops attempts to control an uncontrollable mass.

Finally, to extend the analogy above, it might seem that the public
loudhailering of offenders would be a way of deterring others but we are the
street that hears the policeman (again and again) but theres a whole country
out there that will never hear it, not until they visit the street for the
first time..therefore the only way to warn them would be to have a netcop
constantly attacking people daily with life becoming even more tiresome for
everyone here, which of course leads us back to the start of this thread, I
too would rather see a handful of positive and informative community based
OT discussions (such as described in sues excellent post) rather than
absolutely negative long and tiresome threads discussing barkers (et al)
agenda of chastisement and restriction, creating an atmosphere that only
suits a radical minority and (imo) not the group as a whole.
