Sorry Nick, I do think that you ought to mention each time that the
certificate of postage is worthless as you won't refund if the
packet gets lost and neither will your postal authority. It's not
your fault - but people aren't to know and could assume that
trading with you is the same as trading with someone on the
mainland. Where standard delivery would be fine and basically
risk-free for the buyer.
No it ain't worthless as it proves I posted it.
Maybe so but in the UK mainland it acts as postal insurance up to ten
times the amount of postage paid. As Palindr?me wrote, folk will
automatically assume they have some sort of cover.
At the end of the day, you are still liable for that parcel being
delivered to the buyer. If it doesn't arrive the onus is on you to
make good.
Ok I agree in future I will warn them that Standard Delivery means no compensation if lost but will provide certificate of posting and if they would like compensation they will have to pay extra for Special Delivery.
Seems fair enough.
IIWY, I would blame it on the Jersey Postal System when you do so. It is not your fault that you can't get the same (free) protection for a stamp that people on the mainland get. You have to go to extra expense to cover compensation that mainland traders don't - so fair enough that you pass those costs on, if people want that protection over and above what your postal system provides as standard.
If I'm selling something, it remains my property until it's delivered to
the buyer - end of story.
If it's something that's valuable enough that I don't want to carry the
risk myself, I'll use whatever level of service required to provide cover
and the cost of this will be added to what the buyer pays and, if the item
gets lost/damaged, the buyer gets his money back.
I really don't understand why anybody else doesn't do the same.
IMHO, FWIW, a very good approach.
However, a seller of low value items using normal post for low value items on the mainland is automatically covered with a (free) CoP by Royal Mail. A seller on Jersey isn't - there will be a significant extra cost and it does seem reasonable to ask the buyer if he wants to avoid that extra cost by taking the risk himself.
For example: A small old processor worth 5GBP.
Mainland
It costs 94p to post, insured. If it did go astray, the seller can refund the money and reclaim the money with a P58.
Jersey
It costs 8.20GBP to post, insured. Or 1.05GBP, uninsured. Standard post is not automatically insured by having a CoP, as it is on the mainland.
In the latter case, it does seem reasonable to offer the buyer, faced with an >8GBP charge for something worth less, the option of having it sent at his risk.
So, I think Nick's approach is very reasonable - provided he makes it clear that a JERSEY CoP is worthless from the financial viewpoint.
Either the buyer or the seller has to take the hit if the packet goes astray or is damaged unless extra is paid for insured delivery. As long as it is totally clear that this is the case and who is going to take the hit, I think it is perfectly fair and reasonable.
What would be unfair is if it isn't made clear, before a deal is struck, that JERSEY post is being used and the extra risk and costs that entails. And saying, "A CoP will be obtained" without adding that, as it is a JERSEY POST CoP - it is entirely worthless from a loss or damage viewpoint.
