Hi Computer Traders
Looking for some advice on computer equiptment components I wish to
resource, grateful for anyone who could advise. I am moderately au-faix with
pc mods, having overclocked my AMD XP2000+ to more like a 2200 spec speed
with the aid of careful use of the "wire and pins" technique (very dubious,
but carefully orchestrated and works seeing as my ASUS board isn't a true
overclockers board and the CPU is I think locked more recently by AMD)!!
Well its been working this way for the last two years without exploding
anyway, and reports itself in the bios as faster than what it actually is.
I currently have a CoolerMaster for an AMD XP processor, which is a little
on the noisy side but not unbearably been in use for 3 yrs or so, does a
good job of cooling anyway.
Also have a Radeon 9600 Pro which has been in use for near 1-2 yrs (probably
closer to two).
The CPU hasn't seemingly got noisier, but its the overall combination of
noise that can get a bit grating even though its not actually that loud (my
tolerance for noise has obviously gone down as its not substancially any
worse than it always has been).
I think my original fan was either one of these, or a lower spec version of
it

Also have 2x VERY cheap case fans, they aren't inherently that noisy but
arent well built, and don't see why I might as well not replace them or get
a fan controller which I have space for.
They don't seem to add that much noise when connected given they push quite
a bit of air around but when put altogether it makes a "composite noise"
that I would like to get away from to make an almost silent pc if poss.
Is it worth the investment, can anyone recommend an Akasa fan or similar and
whether its worth getting away from a Coolermaster?
As well as ASUS, I have s/w TyanGM for the RadeOn which enables custom fan
speed of GPU, everything is working ok but you have two choices either 5000
rpm and whiny, or 3500rpm ish and more on the clicky side! It can be set at
4000rpm ish which is probably the best balance.
The CPU fan is just a tad on the whiny side, the GPU is a bit on the clacky
side (like intermittent on failing - I almost replaced it on purchase but
its always managed to avoid complete failover).
ASUS monitor shows the overall system is running beatifully even on a
moderate overclock but thats not my issue - I would like to sound deaden it
a bit more but on a relative budget as its a relatively inexpensive home
build anyway and on 3yrs old technology (but keeps up with a lot of games
etc).
Any advice, items recommended or what have you?
I have already unscrewed the fan without dislodging the processor, what
about just the option of screwing on a higher spec CPU fan onto the cooler?
It have been meandering about doing anything for a long time, because as it
stands there is nothing wrong with the system, and it has been pretty stable
for a good while, but I am starting to getting into the idea of modding it
more to make it a less annoying PC experience.
Asus probe shows CPU ar 43, Mb at 30, and that is with no case fans
currently running in the case, but I have only disconnected the case fans to
see the effect on noise which is a little better (closer to almost
bearable).
Loads of items match up on ebuyer but not sure if its worth it, what items
to go for....
Also in point of mention, I am after a wired or wireless DSL/Cable router to
expand our DSL modem (ethernet NTL) to 2 pcs or more
(with 802.11 it could expand to use for my lappie but I also need a better
battery for that B-5736/Mitac 6120 so the entire wireless experience
wouldn't be entirely wireless, so I am not too bothered to just go for a
standard router).
Again I don't want to pay over the earth and I am not after wireless g lower
speeds would be fine.
Anywhere that does the B-5736 at a reasonable price <£80 are all out of
stock.
So far these are the things I have investigated
A front fan controller - to control the noise of existing (or new) case
fans...?

Akasa 80mm case fans....likely to be better than the 99p ones I had from
ebuyer originally

Speeze VultraSpin CPU fan ? or maybe a

Obviously just moderate changes to cooling shouldn't cost me the moon, but
throwing in a new laptop battery (OEM or universal type), PLUS wireless is
definitely going to build the cost up to over £100.
Thats ok but I very much doubt there is any all in one source for all of
this, for instance ebuyer don't do my battery or any universal laptop types.
I could concentrate on just cooling and enabling routing for my 2 pcs to get
the internet at once, and forget about 802.11 for now as it wasn't something
I was desperate for just thinking about it at the same time as looking for a
new router.
I don't use the laptop but if I went to WLAN I would of course use it more
often.
I wouldn't HAVE to get the battery supply because I could search for a power
source but this can be annoying unless you especially want to charge your
laptop.
I think my current duff batt lasts for 5-10 minutes at most.
Many thanks, any offers or pointers appreciated - though I would prefer to
deal with well known trading individuals rather than private unless
collecting locally from my area (Northants) in person proven working, unless
its an ebay purchase (if this makes any sense but offers some comeback if
anything goes wrong).
I am quite happy to go for used items so long as its priced accurately.
Actually I am doubtful anyone can do cheaper than ebuyer, (ebay prices are
from another dimension), but there may be experienced trading specialists
with infitine product knowledge of fans which is infinitely better than
buying an unknown item from a mass retailer. e.g. does it fit my radeon and
will it present any difficulties?
