What business of yours is it to post a third party's email address on a

get your jollies attacking users of this newsgroup.

I just knew you'd have to weigh in eventually. I haven't replied in the past, but you're causing a lot of grief extending threads about Neil, with your personal vendetta.

Sorry I upset you, Bob. I am not sure that I am causing a lot of grief, but that is probably a fruitless argument to pursue. However, as you are entitled to reply to my post, I am entitled to reply to Neil's posts, and that is all that I have done. It's not personal. If Neil wasn't throwing his weight around, I would not have an issue.

I have been using this newsgroup for many years, almost since its inception. Most of that time I have stood back and tried to ignore Neil's behaviour. There came a point where I did not feel I could tolerate his bullying any more.

I tried the polite approach, as have others. Like them, I also received abuse. The polite approach does not work with him, he won't accept any disagreement. Perhaps you would care to come up with an approach that will stop his abuse of people here?

Much of Usenet runs by consensus. The consensus is generally to tolerate a certain amount of off-topic posting, but to discourage excessive off-topic posting. I repeat discourage, not abuse.

As best as I can judge, the consensus in this newsgroup does not support his abusive approach. It does support those who politely remind off-topic posters and it does support those who point out more appropriate forums. It also supports an atmosphere of tolerance, and is supportive of those who come here to trade, even if they also wander off the subject occasionally, especially on a Friday night.

There are those on this newsgroup who are approaching off-topic posting correctly and successfully. Others have recently shown the kind of replies that should be given. I support the replies they have given.

For most of us, the purpose is not to drive people away from this newsgroup, but to encourage them to use it correctly. What I think the majority using this newsgroup want is for more people to come in and trade, in a friendly fashion, not to run Stalag Usenet. I think the biggest danger to this newsgroup is a drop in active trading. That won't be helped if people feel this group is unfriendly. We can afford some tolerance.

If the newsgroup were to settle down to what should be normal running, then you would only see me when I am looking to buy or sell (although mostly I respond by email to other people's adverts), or the topic of a thread catches my attention.

I would prefer not to be involved in this argument, but I cannot just stand back and ignore bad behaviour from one individual continuing year after year. If someone else can come up with a solution, then I would be delighted to become uninvolved.

Is my view of the consensus correct, or do others in fact welcome Neil Barker's interventions?
