One thing distinguishes the 250GB drives from the rest of the 7200.8 series. It's the one drive where it doesn't use the entire space on all platters. 16GB is electonically *ignored*. Perhaps that is causing the problems.

All hard drives "ignore" some of their capacity. Extra sectors are used to replace faulty sectors - these are hidden by the drive's logic and remapped so that the substitution is transparent to the IDE interface.
