A lot of articles recently on China and Tibet, but today the
Washington Post has an article on how various Buddhist monks in Sri
Lanka have supported the use of violence in the fight between the
majority Sinhalese, who are predominantly Buddhist, and the minority
Tamils, who are mainly Hindus and Christians. See

The article does a fairly poor job of explaining how these monks
reconcile Buddhist teachings on non-violence and their political calls
for more war. For that, see a report on the Norwegian-facilitated
peace process in Sri Lanka, which describes the monks' attitudes
towards a peace process as follows:

"[M]any Buddhist monks have voiced consider-able hostility towards the
Norwegian-facilitated peace process in Sri Lanka, because they fear
that a political solution to the conflict will ultimately result in a
division of Sri Lanka into two separate states. Equally, Norway’s role
in the peace process is viewed with suspicion, as Norway is considered
to be pro-Tamil. In the opinion of many monks, a decentralized
political structure – for example

You don't get it, do you? The Tamils have a ruling caste. They want
autonomy, at least, so they can continue to oppress and enslave the
majority. The Tigers are not "freedom fighters", they are simply very
ambitious criminals.

There is no such thing as justification in Buddhism. The karma is the
same for all and forever. There is no "reconciliation" between karma
and justification. The wrong thinking of the drooling idiot "peace
process" makers is total, unfortunately, as usual.

The govt of Sri Lanka is fighting the rebels just as Abraham Lincoln
did the Confederates, but for much better reasons. Lincoln was for the
union, Sri Lanka, and Buddhists. are against slavery. The Tamils make a
religion of slavery. Choose. daveA

All you say may be true. And much of the literature I've seen goes even
further in the rhetorical flourishes describing the evil Tamils, with
the Hitler analogy drawn quite often.

Most of the Tamils are just victims, not evil.

Say the rhetoric is all true. But
you failed to answer the question that interested me - when did the
basic tenets of Buddhist teaching incorporate the ideas of "Sri Lanka as
a sacred land and the Sinhala people as the protectors of Buddhism" and
then over-ride the tenets of non-violence?

I did answer the question. You ignored the answer, which is never.

One more time: There is no such thing as justification in Buddhism.
