If you count every breath as a breathing exercise, will that
automatically slow down the breathing? In other words, is that new
Resperate device no better than counting breaths? If counting breaths
automatically slows down breathing, will it eventually slow the
breathing to the under 10 per minute the same as Resparate device?
The RESPeRATE machine, a cunning and entertaining
biofeedback device, does not count your breaths.
It measures the current DURATION of your in-breath and
synchronizes music with your in-breath's current duration.
It gradually slows down the tempo of the music, guiding
you to slower and slower breathing. It constantly measures
the duration of your breath and slows it down gradually.
When I first got my RESPeRATE, I was enchanted with
it because I enjoyed synchronizing my breath with
music. (It has two selectable melodies to keep you
interested.) After a month I was able to reach slower
breathing faster by simply counting the duration of
my in-breath and out-breath. But I never regretted
the purchase of the machine because it started me
meditating on deep, slow breathing and eventually
Breathwalk, which I have taught to others.
