Counting the breaths doesn't really "automatically slow down the
breathing." Counting breaths is a way of focusing on your breathing.
Focusing on your breathing is a way of still mental fluctuations. The
end result is that you are calmer and your breath slows down.

I just looked up this device you mentioned, and it looks like a big
waste of money. It basically tells you how to breathe.

"To lower your blood pressure, you'll need to pace your breathing
without effort. Yet even the simplest breathing exercises, such as
counting, reciting a mantra or consciously observing your breath-
ing, require effort.

RESPeRATE uses rhythmic tones to pace your breathing subliminally.
This slows your breathing without a conscious effort on your part. So
while unaided breathing techniques can have a relaxing effect,
RESPeRATE delivers a far greater affect on constricted blood vessels."

So basically it's marketed towards people who are too lazy to count the
breaths. (Such EFFORT!)

OMG! $300! lol

Another problem is that someone who uses this device is basically at
it's mercy. If you learn to focus on your breath on your own you can
do it unaided, anytime, anywhere. Ultimately, if your blood pressure
and general health are your concern, you'd be healthier taking that
effort to count or focus on your breath. Even if you don't get to this
"target" of under 10 breaths a minute, you'd be breathing healthier all
day rather than 15 minutes a day.

Not to mention the benefits of
slowing...ones...mental...fluctuations...ahhh
