There often seems to be more diet books than
people on the planet. Every celebrity has a diet
book. As a joke I came up with my own diet: "The
Lost in the Woods Diet"! Almost no one got the
joke, and it "backfired"! I received an email from
a publisher's agent who said they liked the title
and the idea. I figured a joker was trying to play a
joke on me, the original joker. But the agent was
authentic. I told the agent that I posted my idea/
title as a spoof. The agent replied that the best
books sometimes start that way, and that the
publisher would like to get serious about the idea,
and would help me write the book by providing a
nutrititionist to consult on it. The agent had done
her homework and discovered that I had written
five technical books and had scientific credentials.

Okay, so I'm going to go ahead with the venture.
I can push my vegetarian agenda from a new
angle. (The agent wants to keep the bugs part
in the book because bugs add "panache"!)

First ask them if you have to give them any money.

Quite the contrary. They've offered an advance--
as soon as I provide an acceptable first chapter.
Be careful what you joke about: someone may
take you seriously. Today Patti and I walked the
dogs in the woods. We looked for something to
eat. The only thing we found we will dare to try
to eat is acorns. Where the hell are the pine nuts
in pine cones? We couldn't find any. I may have
to pretend I'm lost in a tropical woods. We found
mushrooms. Okay, the idea is that when you go
to the grocery store you only buy stuff you MIGHT
find in the woods. When you have this orientation
and attitude, you discover how much of our food
is manufactured beyond natural recognition.

Maybe you should actually go get lost and see what you come up with. :)

And when I say "Get lost" I mean that in the most helpful way possible.

Check the frugal living type websites. frugalliving.about.com is a
good one.

Oh, and one very important word: DANDELIONS!

Of course, the irony is, that if you're lost in the woods, your best
bet is to kill something and eat it.

As my dad says, "Vegetables aren't food. Vegetables are what food
eats."

Buuuut good luck! :)
