As you wish, Julian, in page 325 of this yellow colored hard copy book
with a green jacket(mine now torn, ;)):
Under Question 20, "NAMMA GOTTAN NAJIRATI", which really means "FAMOUS
NAMES NEVER DIES"" - starting from page 324....
q/
...Some even went so far as to declare that the Buddha's name is
immortal. The Buddha, however, stepped into the scene to rectify this
error. He declared that his name is as mortal as any other object of
the universe and proceeded furthur to state that 5,000 years was the
maximum period his reputation would last.

buddha may have been avoiding the full
explanation, i. e., the unknowable 'eternal'
subsequent consequences that may occur
due to any action, knowing full well that it would
just lead to much more of the same type of
explaining. he might also have
regretted his decision to teach [imo]
knowing that explanations just lead to more
and more explanation which just adds to the
concept burden one must eventually drop.
nisargadatta maharaj would also expound
on his spiritual perspective to disciples while
at the same time talking of the reality as simply
an illusion. if indeed it is all illusion, is he trying
to foster an improved illusion by the relatively
miniscule amount of influence he might or might
not have?
We are entitled to draw our conclusion in the spirit of the Kalama
Sutra.
Yes not very helpful, I know, but the entity called the Buddhist
Missionary Society of Bricksfield, Kl, M'sia do exist and did(still
do?) sell books in English(via mail) which are comparatively rare. Too
bad they don't have a clear cut website after all this while. I can't
supply you the physical address because the telephone book of that
State is not readily at hand.
my library has all phone books from
most major cities and usenet itself is
a major repository of such information.
