It is not a Christian concept at all. In fact if you follow Locke's
logic you will see that it basically entails a rejection of the Fall.

"Self evident" truths are axiomatic, such as that 1 = 1. There is no
proof. But the best way to verify an axiom is to reject it, and see
whether that rejection results in inevitable absurdity. If you reject
that 1 = 1, and do your taxes accordingly, the tax collector may wish
to interrogate you. If you reject that there is a right to life and
liberty, the result is likely to be horrific.

In particular, the Virginia Tech case resulted in the
wanton slaughter of dozens of innocent lives, a great many of whom
would be alive today had the necessary means for self-defense been
permitted under law.

You got to be kidding! If Virginia had decent gun control laws this
man would have never been armed in the first place. This kind of thing
doesn't happen in New Zealand or any other Western Democracy that has
strong gun control laws.

It also did not happen in the USA prior to the 1960s, when guns could
be freely bought at your local hardware store. Sociological factors,
far more so than restrictions on gun ownership, affect gun crimes.

Some of the students present were indeed
licensed to carry weapons, but that license did not apply to the
campus.

Geeze. So you would have college kids routinely carrying guns to
class? I think I'd find another profession first!

We are speaking of properly licensed people who have been screened,
trained, and educated in the applicable laws. Everytime you go to the
shopping mall, or the grocery store, or on the street, you unknowingly
pass by many, many people who are "carrying." They do not endanger
you. On the contrary.

Collectivisation versus individual liberties is one of the hallmark
controversies of our time.

It is the hallmark of civilization, period.

What is? Collectivisation? The hallmark of civilization is
individual liberty. Unless you consider Castro's Cuba a civilized
society. And if you are a college professor, there is a strong
possibility that you admire him.
